For example, do you already know what is the difference between IPS and Tn monitors? And do you know how one of the two types of monitors is more effective than the other? Monitors can be distinguished in various categories, and there are some more inclined to perform multimedia reproductions, such as films or photographs, others faster with animations and that marry with the lightning-fast movements of video games. As you may have already guessed, there is no perfect solution for every need, but if you already know what you will use your new PC monitor with, the choice will be much easier for you.
During the purchase phase, all the definitions already used on televisions are also valid: each monitor can reproduce a more or less high brightness, can have different response times, a refresh rate from 60 Hz onwards and other technical characteristics that can be more or less less useful depending on the case. But ban the chatter and let’s proceed!

How to choose a monitor
To choose the Best Monitor For Accountants, you must also know the definitions of the characteristics that you will find mentioned in the price lists of the various models. In addition, you need to understand how big the space you want to occupy on your desk and what diagonal the image display surface should have.
- HD monitors - the cheapest monitors currently available on the market are those with HD resolution, equal to 1280 x 720 pixels in the 16: 9 format. To date they are a bit anachronistic and I do not recommend them to you unless you are very demanding and want to spend the bare minimum
- Full HD monitors - have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and currently represent the best solution in terms of quality-price. They are also ideal for gaming. The recommended dimensions for this type of display range from 21 "to 27", also because if you play too closely on a large monitor you risk a significant eye strain.
- 2K monitors - have a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and are particularly suitable for working with photos and videos. The recommended sizes for this type of display range from 27 ″ and up.
- 4K or UltraHD monitors - have a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels and are the best the market currently offers. They can be used in various fields, primarily photo and video processing, but they are also good for gaming. They must be associated with a computer and, above all, with a very performing video card, otherwise they end up being counterproductive (in the sense that to take full advantage of their resolution, the performance of games and applications is "castrated". The recommended size for this type of display is at least 28 ".
Technologies: IPS, VA or Tn?
Let's start to distinguish the various types of screens currently available in stores and see what are the technical characteristics to consider before buying one. The first choice you have to make is on the type of panel : all the displays currently on the market are LCD (liquid crystal, with LED or fluorescent backlighting). But beware, not all LCD displays are created equal. Depending on the type of panel used, they can be distinguished as follows.
- TN monitors (short for Twisted Nematic) - are known for their very low response times (down to 1ms) and the fact that they are often available at a good price. They are the most suitable for video games and for viewing 3D content.
- IPS monitors (short for In Plane Switching) - are more oriented to the world of productivity and multimedia, as they render colors better than TN and much higher viewing angles, but have almost always high response times.
- VA monitors (short for vertical alignment) - they offer a good viewing angle and good contrast, but they have not-so-slow response times and color reproduction isn't as perfect as on IPS panels. They can also suffer from the annoying ghosting effect. They are divided into PVA (short for Patterned Vertical Alignment) and MVA (short for Multi-domain Vertical Alignment) which have even more marked blacks and contrasts than the former. This type of panel should be taken into consideration especially in the workplace.
Unlike the world of televisions, in the PC monitor field it is difficult, if not almost impossible, to find models with OLED panels.
Each monitor can support more or less high resolutions, or technologies that may or may not be useful in certain areas. Below I offer you some definitions of the essential characteristics of monitors.
Dimensions and resolution
In monitors, you must not only look at the size, that is the number of inches, but also the resolution, that is the maximum number of pixels that can make up the images on the screen. The size of the displays generally range from 18.5 "to over 30", while as far as resolutions are concerned we have several options at our disposal.
- among the main features you need to look at before buying a monitor there are also response times, i.e. the number of milliseconds that a pixel takes to change its state on the screen (this parameter is essential for gaming and should be as low as possible if you need a monitor for gaming).

- this measure is used to denote the number of frames "rendered" every second by the computer graphics card (FPS) and establishes the fluidity of animations and any movement. It is mainly used in video games or multimedia content. Unlike the refresh rate it is not fixed, but can vary according to the workload required by the software / video game.
- represents the refresh rate of the image on the screen, i.e. the number of times the image is redrawn on the display every second (measured in Hz). The last two parameters are better when they are higher. In addition, the nVidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync technologies have recently become established among the most demanding gamers . They allow you to synchronize the frame rate to the refresh rate of the screen, in order to avoid the reproduction of annoying artifacts (jargon called tearing or stuttering).
- stands for High Dynamic Range and indicates the monitor's ability to reproduce a wider range of colors, including shades of shadows and highlights that SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) monitors cannot display. It's a great innovation of recent times that you only find on mid-high and high-end monitors and which indicates, in short, that that particular model offers very high quality static images. For example, an HDR monitor can reproduce very bright lights and dark shadows in the same frame, without burning the former or hiding the details of the latter.
Types of panels
There are a number of different panel technologies on the market, all with their own advantages and disadvantages. We won't go into neat details of how they work, but we'll just let you know which ones you should be interested in and why.
Unless you are on a really tight budget, we recommend using IPS at a minimum. TN and VA panels can be purchased cheaper, but in most cases the benefits in color representation and viewing angles outweigh the cost difference.
More exotic panels include OLED, QLED, MicroLED and it won't be long before we start seeing QD-OLED on monitors too. To put it simply, all of these panels offer advantages over IPS, primarily in the areas of color accuracy, dynamic range and black levels. OLED is the current champion when it comes to image quality, but unfortunately, these panels can experience image burn-in and are therefore usually not ideal for use as a PC monitor.
As of now, QLED is arguably the best choice in the premium end of the spectrum, with MicroLED technology still being prohibitive.
The refresh rate is simply how many times the screen is able to change the displayed image per second. 60Hz is the standard speed you'll find in most monitors, and for most people, that's fast enough. For games, however, especially for those who enjoy fast-paced first-person shooters, the refresh rate starts to matter a lot more.
Many gaming monitors now offer refresh rates of 144Hz and higher, all with the intent of smooth gameplay and faster reactions in competitive titles.
There are also monitors available with varying refresh rates, these will be labeled as AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync support. These features are geared towards PC games. They both do the same thing but are compatible with AMD or Nvidia graphics cards. It allows the monitor to talk to your gaming PC and match the screen refresh rate to the frames per second of the game you are playing. This eliminates screen tearing and allows for a smoother overall gaming experience.
Having a nice display to look at is no good if you have crippling back pain, so it's important to think about where your monitor will be placed and how you'll need to adjust it to fit your desk setup.
Some monitors, especially on the cheaper side, only allow you to adjust the tilt. The more expensive models often have a wide height adjustment, as well as tilt and swivel, which allow you to perfectly position the monitor.
There are ways around this, of course. Most monitors support a standard VESA mount and can be attached to an adjustable monitor arm if needed.
This is pretty straightforward. If you know you'll need to connect via Display Port, you'd better check that the monitor you like has that connection. Fortunately, it's pretty basic these days and most people will need HDMI or Display Port. Most modern monitors offer both options.
If you need to connect to something older like VGA or DVI, then you'll need to be more careful with the monitor you select. There are still a number of options with these legacy connectors to choose from.
Some monitors allow USB-C connection for connecting a single cable to laptop or MacBook, toom and this can be very useful and save you a lot of hassle if you frequently switch between work at your desk and on the go.
Of course, it always depends on what fits your budget. A new monitor can be a great investment, but it will last you a long time. Since it sits simply on the desk, a monitor is subject to very little wear and tear over the course of its life, so we'd say it's worth spending a little more for a good one if possible.
We've focused on the 4K and QHD options in this list, but you can save more by choosing a 1080p option. While the extra resolution sounds great, many people won't need it for their daily activities. If you're gaming, a lower resolution will be less of a burden on your graphics card and is likely to result in higher frame rates as well.
It's about finding the right balance for you and your IT needs. Hopefully, armed with this information, you'll be that much closer to finding your perfect monitor.

Every product on this list has been thoroughly evaluated to ensure it works exactly as a recommended choice should.
We've thought of everything, taking into account each model's performance when used for play, work, web browsing and streaming. That meant diving into key specs and features, like HDR compatibility, FreeSync, G-Sync, local dim mode, and more. From there, we then crossed our ratings with every single price tag to make sure they represent good value for money as well.
As with any collection, it is not possible to provide a list that works for every type of user, but we rely on the experiences and opinions of the broader Pocket-lint team, as well as carefully evaluating the areas above, in order to make our best in this regard.
What we always tend to avoid when compiling these choices are useless comparisons of specifics and marketing lines; we just want to provide an easy to understand summary that gives you an idea of how each monitor is used. Our verdicts are concise, but this is purely in the interest of brevity.
